Snapshot
Nines are based in the Body Center. They primarily seek peace, harmony and comfort in their lives. In a sense they are asleep within themselves and deliberately avoid activities or discussions that require an expenditure of energy. They are non-judgmental and like to merge with the energy of others, making them easy going and pleasant to be around. Feeling at peace is important to Nines.

Quick Profile

Nines typically have that laid back, , living-on-cloud-nine attitude that they don't want to have disturbed. Easy going, agreeable, trusting, emotionally even-keeled, receptive, reassuring, self-effacing and complacent, they most often passively resist anything distressing by tuning it out. They go with the flow in unpretentious and sometimes overly accommodating ways, and can be prone to procrastination and day dreaming (or spacing out) when faced with the possibility of having to assert themselves in what could be unpleasant circumstances.

Nines are fond of comfort and routine and can be stubborn, fatalistic, resigned and neglectful like the ostrich with its head in the sand. Because they can see all sides of any story, they make good mediators.

People are attracted to Nines because of the feeling of calm they emanate and because Nines regard others non-judgmentally and make others feel accepted, and loved just as they are. In relationships Nines are caring, supportive, and very aware of the goodness of others. At their best they become intensely alive and totally connected to themselves and others, bulwarks in the lives of those close to them, creating peace by working for harmony and acceptance.

Are You a Nine? How many of these do you identify with?

As A Nine:
  • I have the ability to see all sides of an issue clearly. It makes me a good negotiator, but it can make it difficult to make a decision for myself.
  • I have a tendency to neglect important duties in favor of my comfortable routines.
  • I frequently sum up my philosophy of life with little catch phrases; "It is what it is," Whatever makes you happy," "Che sera sera."
  • I'm much more optimistic than pessimistic.
  • I feel uncomfortable being the center of attention.
  • People tell me they feel comfortable, calm, and safe around me.
  • I like listening to people and being supportive.
  • I don't make demands of others, and I pretty much just shut down when others make demands of me.
  • I rarely get angry with people, but I can get depressed and lethargic sometimes. But usually I just don't let things get to me.
  • It's easier for me to know what I don't want than what I do want.
  • I can identify a little with how everyone feels and with each of the Enneagram types.
  • I like to merge or feel like I'm one with whomever, whatever—my lover, friend, family, nature, a group, my dog.
  • I have certain things I use to numb out, or ways of ignoring disturbing things—TV, food, books, video games, collecting, routines—whatever.
  • I have a habit of saying yes to things I really don't want to do.
  • If it's not a big thing, I tend to agree because it's not worth the effort to express a different opinion.
  • I'm really nobody special, but I do like it when you treat me like I am.

In Enneagram Terms:
Also known as: The Peacemaker, The Harmonizer, The Appeaser
The Main Plot: The main character (a 9 of course) sees himself as an easy-going person who's pretty sure that the plot will just magically have a happy ending as long as everyone stays calm, friendly and connected.
Chief Feature: Indolence (Stubborn / Laziness)
Basic Motivation: The need to keep the peace and create harmony, and to merge with others and avoid conflict and tension.
Basic Fear: Of separation, loss and not belonging.
Basic Desire: To have inner peace and calm.
Focus of Attention: "Do I agree or disagree with another's' position?" Other peoples' agendas, requests, demands and preferences are focused on at the expense of their own. Attention goes to spreading out, diffusing, merging with others.
Passion: Sloth / Laziness
Virtue: Right action
Psychological Defense Mechanism: Narcoticization --it's numbing feelings that are thought bad or dangerous to experience. Nines numb out in many ways -- talking themselves out of anger, spacing out in comfortable habits (food, TV, alcohol, novels, or games).
